This is one of my mom's suggestions for both health and saving money. Enjoy! - Dee
Thermos Bottle Cooking
1/4 cup of organically grown whole brown rice, oat groats, millet, hulled
barley, wheat berries, or red lentils.
2 cups boiling water
Fill thermos* with boiling water to preheat thermos. Pour water back back into teakettle. Add grain and refill with boiling water. Put cap on securely and screw cup on to retain heat. Lay thermos on its side to cook all the grain. Add salt, fruit, herbs, etc. when it has finished cooking. Pour into bowl and immediately wash thermos. Enjoy with fruit or herbs, etc. For variety add two grains together, like 1/8 cup wheat and 1/8 cup barley ground in coffee grinder before cooking or lentils and rice.
By putting this on to cook at night you are assured of a hot breakfast the next morning. Makes a good take along lunch or supper and will cook in about three hours. If traveling, fix it at noon and have a nutritional food for supper.
* Choose a glass lined pint thermos with a narrow mouth. Garage sales & stores that sell used items are good places to look.
Old fashioned lunch pails will hold two pint thermoses in the flat position for cooking and carrying.
There is no heating up or cleaning up the kitchen with thermos bottle cooking except the few minutes it takes to boil water.
